What 2026’s Home Security Data Reveals About the Battery-vs-Wired Trade-Off

Renter adoption of security cameras jumped from 42% to 54% in a single year, the sharpest one-year gain in SafeHome.org’s tracked dataset. The likely driver is availability, not a sudden surge in security spending: battery-powered cameras don’t require landlord permission, a drill, or a lease amendment. For a renter, that’s the whole appeal in one sentence.

But battery power’s popularity doesn’t mean it is better. Look past the adoption headline and the 2026 data tells a more complicated story, one where buyers are starting to notice what easy installation costs them.

Cloud Fatigue Is Setting In

Two numbers tell the same story. Outdoor camera usage among security system owners has dropped 9 points from its 2024 peak, per SafeHome.org. And cloud-only storage has fallen out of favor: just 32% of camera and doorbell users now rely on it exclusively, while 49% prefer a hybrid of cloud and local storage.

Buyers are pulling back from the setups they adopted for convenience, and rethinking what they actually need those cameras to do.

Market Share Tells a Different Story

The adoption story and the market share story don’t match. Wireless, battery-powered units still make up more than 60% of unit shipments in the U.S. smart home camera market, per IndexBox’s 2026 analysis. Ease of setup, not capability, is still what most buyers are shopping for first.

Yet AC-powered, wired devices still hold 71.2% of the broader home security camera market by value, per Mordor Intelligence’s 2026 report, even with battery and solar models forecast to grow faster (a 15.28% compound annual rate through 2031).

Battery Life Isn’t the Real Constraint

It’s tempting to read the shrinking outdoor-camera footprint and rising hybrid-storage preference as a battery problem, something a bigger cell or a faster charge cycle eventually solves. It isn’t just that.

A camera with continuous recording, higher resolution, always-on connectivity, and on-device processing draws much more power than a camera that wakes up briefly to log a two-second clip. Manufacturers building for battery life restrict those features on purpose, no matter how good the battery itself gets, because every added feature shortens battery runtime. That trade-off sets a hard ceiling on what a battery camera can do. A wired camera, drawing continuous AC power, doesn’t have to make that trade at all.

That’s the part the adoption numbers don’t capture. A camera can be easy to buy and easy to mount, but that comes at the cost of fewer extended security features and shorter battery life.

Installation Closes the Gap

None of this makes battery cameras the wrong choice for every home. Renters, in particular, often don’t have another option. But for homeowners who do have a choice, the market data suggests the narrative is shifting away from “wireless because it’s simpler” and toward something closer to “wired, if I can get it without tearing up the walls.”

That’s a solvable problem, and the fuller breakdown of that trade-off covers how professional installation closes the gap between the clean, wire-free look homeowners want and the full feature set that only continuous power can support.

The renter adoption curve will likely keep climbing. Battery unit shipments will likely keep leading by volume. But the value-share numbers, the storage preference shift, and the decreased use in outdoor cameras all point to the same underlying trend: buyers who have the option are starting to ask what they’re actually giving up for the sake of a clean install. More of them, it seems, have decided it’s more than they want to sacrifice.
