Action film is a genre which usually involves the main guy or guys finding themselves facing a series of challenges which may include performing physical feats and exemplary fight scenes, fast paced events and frantic chases. Action films generally focus on a cool character struggling against tremendous odds and defying all (well almost all) logic. Of course it consists of a villain and of course it all ends in the victory for hero. In short, lots of senseless fighting with biology defying humans saving the world constitutes action film; almost.
Usually action movies are enjoyable as they provide much rush without trying to figure out much of what really is happening. Flashy stunts with cool effects draw everyone’s attention till most of us are just staring in a trance at the screens. Let’s take a look at the recently famous action movies.
1. The Avengers (2012):
As everyone can guess by its name, this is a super hero film involving well known and loved super stars from Disney. In the film, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., asks Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to help save humanity from Thor’s adoptive brother Loki who wants to subjugate Earth.
2. The Expendables (2010):
The film is about a group of elite mercenaries who are given a mission to remove a Latin American dictator from power, but they soon discover he is but a mere puppet controlled by a ruthless ex-CIA officer. This ensues ruthless fighting. Also, this movie pays homage to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and 1990s, and stars many of the veteran action heroes.
3. The Expendables 2 (2012):
The sequel to ‘The Expendables’, the story follows the mercenary group known from its prequel in their allegedly simple mission but which undoubtedly later turns into a quest for revenge against their rival mercenary after he murders one of them while threatening to unleash a deadly weapon on the world.
4. Skyfall (2012):
Skyfall is the twenty-third James Bond film by Eon Productions. The film centers on Bond investigating an attack on MI6 which is actually a part of a plot by former MI6 operative Raoul Silva to discredit and kill M in revenge against her for betraying him. Lots of betrayal and trust issues with a dash of intricate stunts and plot line twists.
5. Inception (2010):
This movie offers a new twist in the action world. The lead is a thief who commits corporate espionage but with flair; by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets rather than physically infiltrating the enemy’s premises. He is offered a task considered to be impossible: “inception”; the implanting of a person’s idea into another’s subconscious. The rest is history.
6. The Raid: Redemption (2012):
It is an Indonesian martial arts action film. The S.W.A.T. team ends up trapped in a building run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers. As a rookie member, Rama is instructed to hang back in the covert mission involving the extraction of a brutal crime lord but in the end Rama must complete the mission and escape with his life.
7. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011):
It is the fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series. It’s named ghost protocol because the team goes rogue; the IMF is shut down after it’s implicated in a terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol initiates, and Ethan Hunt along with his rogue team must now go undercover to clear their organization’s name. They have no help, no contact and are totally off the grid, very much like ghosts.
8. Pacific Rim (2013):
An apocalypse is almost brought on as a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures continues. Humanity’s last hope lies in an obsolete weapon, the retrieval of which is tasked to a former pilot and a trainee. They have the mission to save the seeming end of the world and perform the impossible.
9. X-Men: First Class (2011):
X-Men can never go wrong, and here’s another example. In this movie, the United States government asks the Mutants with superhuman abilities to help them against a cruel dictator to save the world from world war III. Lots of X-Men show up including new and recurring characters.
10. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012):
Another epic saga in the Spider-Man movie. Although this movie is not a sequel to the previous Spider-Man movies, it still rocks as a stand-alone. Peter Parker wants to find out why his parents disappeared when he was young which results with him crossing paths with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner who goes rogue and tries to destroy the city. Now Peter (along with his girlfriend) must save the city.
