The Indian Premiere League is an ace league for Twenty20 cricket in India. It was started by Lalit Modi in the year 2008. It is currently consisting of 9 exclusive teams with players from across the globe. It offers an entertainment seen nowhere else where captains of different countries are made to play in the same team and compete with their fellow citizen cricketers. Players develop close bonds with their IPL teammates, not in the least because franchises have fewer disciplinary restrictions than international teams.
Let’s take a look at this year’s most popular players dominating in this IPL series.
1. Virat Kohli
Apart from being an ace cricketer, Virat has successfully become a sensation amongst many Indian teenagers. Currently he’s been trusted with the position of captaining ‘Royal Challenger’s Bangalore’. Under his supervision, RCB has found its place on the top of the Points Table. Kohli has been a vastly improved batsman in the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013 – aggregating 321 runs from six innings (Enjoy your ORANGE cap while you’re at it Virat!) He’s the highest run scorer this season as of 21st April. He’s an aggressive batsman who acts a lot on emotions.
2. MS Dhoni
This man never seems to be out of luck. And as a result, his team ‘Chennai Super King’ also seems to be super lucky. Dhoni is known to keep his cool even during nail-biting moments in IPL matches. He has been an important and most crucial contributor of runs for CSK. Not just batting, even wicket-keeping comes to him naturally. His expertise in this field of cricketing sets him apart from another cricketer in India. He has made approximately 1929 runs so far in the IPL matches.
3. Chris Gayle
He’s a top-class cricketer from West Indies. Initially he played for Kolkata Knight Riders, but in the previous 3-4 years he’s been playing for RCB. He prefers to bat at No. 1, i.e., as a game opener. He has the tag of maximum number of 6’s in the whole IPL season (146 sixes) in just 50 matches. He was more consistent in the previous years compared to 2013 but still his popularity hasn’t decreased one bit. Bowlers still fear the “Gayle Storm’.
4. Kumar Sangakkara
He’s a native of Sri Lanka and is widely reputed for his contribution as the captain on Sri Lanka. His experience has made him get the opportunity to captain the new IPL team in 2013 ‘Sunrisers Hyderabad’. Sangakkara is said to be one of the most polished and prudent of batsmen in cricket history. Sangakkara scored 1567 runs in 62 matches in IPL.
5. Rahul Dravid
He is the most prolific batsman IPL has seen this season. Initially he played for RCB, but currently he’s been given the job to lead Rajasthan Royals, which he is accomplishing quite cleanly so far. IPL is all about power-hitting and playing unorthodox shots. But Dravid shows how one can score runs, at a good pace, even in the shortest format of the game with a sound technique by staying focused and not under-estimating the opponent’s team.
