1. The Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test
This is the book by the GRE test makers themselves, so obviously is a definite must buy. You get the insight into the test, guided by the ones who make the test themselves. There may not be exhaustive coverage of every topic, nor the tone friendly, but there’s definitely much to learn from this book, especially if you want to start in the right direction with the right footing. A bonus of this book is the two GRE computer-based tests given in an accompanying CD.
This book is a must buy for any GRE aspirant, and should be complemented with any of the following books.
2. Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides, 4th Ed
If you were worried about the not-so-comprehensive content of the earlier book, then go ahead with this book. Calling this prep set ‘comprehensive’ would be belittling to that word. There are eight individual guides targeting each of the main topics in GRE plus an online preparation test.
The books are done wonderfully and there’s never a sense of over-dozing on information, though last minute study with this book would be impossible.
3. Cracking the GRE Premium Edition 2015 (by Princeton Review’s)
This book specializes in strategy as well as selective tips for each section of the test. Included is access to online video tutorials plus two full length GRE practice tests with detailed explanations. Additional downloadable study guides, four online tests, and other resources are also available.
For math, this book has a weak base, but its core strength lies in exhaustive explanation of the verbal section.
4. Kaplan GRE Premier 2015 with 6 Online Practice Tests & DVD
This book in itself is a complete test prep system. Along with the book, there’s a digital iPad download, a DVD, six practice tests and online materials with practice sets and adaptive tests. A noteworthy feature in this edition is the 500 question quiz bank, designed to provide students with better customized quizzes and review of GRE problem questions.
Kaplan provides test takers with academic support from faculty on their Facebook page and also, a guarantee, that if you are using their resources and strategies you will score higher on the GRE General Test or receive a full refund.
5. Barron’s GRE
The last, but not the worst, is Barron’s GRE book which offers separate coverage and strategies for each of the sections of the GRE (Verbal, Analytical, and Quantitative).
Additionally, it offers a diagnostic test and two mock tests with detailed answers & explanations.
