In the statistical study conducted by the Aviation and Marketing Professors, Virgin America has been rated as the best airline in the US. This kind of study is done rarely and it has been conducted after 1991. The results of the study were published on Monday. Virgin America won on all grounds for being the number one ranked airline in the US. The US Airline industry has been booming recently and great results were witnessed in the 2013 Airline quality rating. All the American airlines scored well in these ratings.
The formula that is used in order to determine the credibility of the airline considers various factors such as consumer decision making, the hospitality offered in the airline and also the frequency of on-time departures. The on-time performance is the factor that weighs the most in the formula followed by cancellations, mishandling of baggage and the consumer complaints. All this data had been retrieved by the US Department of Transportation’s monthly customer report.
Virgin America scored the best in the study. However, its on-time performance saw a brisk dip as compared to the results in 2013 from 2012. The results have dropped down from 83.5 percent to 82.1 percent. The baggage handling capability of Virgin airlines was ranked the best in the US. Despite seeing a dip in the on-time performance of Virgin airlines, it scored well on the other factors that were considered and made it as the best airline in the US.
The co-author of the study, Dean Headley stated that Virgin airline has been in a great place from the last few years and maintaining those standards to higher degree. Dean Headley is also the associate professor in marketing sector in the Wichita State University. This study has been drawn jointly with the efforts of Headley and Brent Bowen, who serves as a professor at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Headley also added that considering the whole airline industry situation in the US, the results are very nice. It points to the fact that US is in a very good position as far as the flight performances are concerned. The prices are also reasonable and are not scaring the passengers from travelling into the flights. However, he mentioned that the airfares are not considered for the rating that has been penned down by him. The most important factor is the “on-time performance” as well as the customer reviews. Mishandling of bags is also an important factor as it can take a toll on the plans of the customers.
When it comes to the “on-time performance”, Hawaiian airlines topped the charts with 93.3 percent score. 15 US airlines were considered for the study and American Eagle airline was put at the bottom of the list for its delays and the worst “on-time performance”.
The industry has improved significantly on the grounds of denied boarding and the consumer complaints as compared to the report of the year 2012. This is an encouraging factor considering the fortune of the US airline industry. When it comes to customer complaints, the Southwest Airlines registered the lowest complaints with the score of 0.34 complaints per 100,000 passengers. It had the lowest number of complaints from its customers. On the other hand, Frontier airlines registered a heavy score in terms of complaints from its customers with 3.09 per 100,000 passengers. Headley has considered this period as a period of readjustment for the airline industry. He also said that the customers will receive better services after the release of the study. It is very important to know the differences between various airport carriers in terms of their performance in order to select the best airline.
